TCK - Third Culture Kids
I first learned of this term thanks to Teo Ober (EBV - class of 85). Teo only lives about 45 minutes from my home here in FT. Lauderdale, so we see each other often. One day he mentioned TCK, naturally I did not know what the he was talking about. BUT once he explained to me what it means, from then on alot of things about myself and the way I think made sence. I'm talking about feelings and the way I see the world; it's always been different than the rest of the people around me. Specially the feeling of never feeling at home anywhere.
My mother's from Colombia, my father's from Louisiana, I grew up in Venezuela and got my elementary and high school education at an American school in Venezuela (EBV-Escuela Bella Vista). My graduating class of 17 had 9 different nationalities !! and I speak fluently 2 languages. Not everyone has this back ground, So TCK put a few things in perspective for me.
So if your feeling out of place ... I hope this helps you. I mentioned TCK to Antonio Escobar (EBV - class of 83) and he said "What's that?" He too had never heard of TCK. Once I explained the term to him and he analysed the concept and did a little research, he told me that it put a few things into perspective regarding his life too.
